I'll be speaking at the IGDA Leadership Forum in the San Francisco area on November 13. My session is on the Personal Leadership track and is called "Being a Pioneer: Staying Passionate About the Future of Games."
Curt Schilling (Red Sox pitcher and 38 Studios co-founder) and Mark Cerny (long-time game designer, programmer and producer) will be giving this year's keynotes.
There will also be a "Studio Heads on the Hotseat" panel moderated by Jen MacLean (IGDA Chair), with Mike Capps of Epic Games, Tim Train of Big Huge Games, Toby Saulnier of 1st Playable, and Brett Close of 38 Studios. That's a great group of opena and plain-speaking gamers and should be a highlight of the conference.
Rich Hilleman of EA (whom I wish we could hear more at conferences) is also giving a session called "Organizational Development as a Game" that sounds like it will offer great perspectives.
Among many other interesting topics, look for the "Due Diligence Revealed" presentation from Michael Heilemann of D2C Games, who has managed the process from both the publisher and the developer side. D2C was founded by Scott Orr, who teamed with Hilleman to create the original hit versions of Madden NFL and many other EA Sports titles... further reminders of how interconnected we are in the game development community.
And then there's an interesting session by Rodney Gibbs (actually, two!), and one by David Edery, and Jamie Fristrom, and Mike McShaffrey and... Maybe I should have just cut-and-pasted the whole program!
I gave a keynote here last year and felt like the entire program was very strong and well-conceived. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends and making some new friends there.
